Native Americans and early European immigrats

The original people of America were "indians".Today we call these people "Native Americans".From 1493 onwards explorers from Britain,France,Spain,Italy and Portugal started to "discover" different parts of America.America gots its name in 1507.It was named after the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci,who wrote about his discoveries there.

Settlers from Europe started arriving in America from the 1580s.Some of the European settlers bagan to take land from the Indians.The Indians tried to fight for their lands and their way of life but they finally lost in 1890.The American government sent them to reservation in the West.Many of them died.

Africans Americans

Between 1600 and 1800 the British,Spanish and Portuguese traders took over a milion people from Africa to the USA.They worked as slaves is the South.In fact,by 1790 20% of the USA's population were black slaves.Slavery ended in 1865,after the four-year American Civil War,but many of the African Americans in the southern states didn't get equal right until the 1960s.
